Meaning of each Tarot Card

There are several other major arcana cards besides the Fool. They are Magician, High Priestess, Empress, Emperor, Hierophant, Lovers, Chariot, Strength, Hermit, Wheel, Justice, Hanged Man, Death, Temperance, Moon, Sun, Judgment and World.

Each card like the Fool card is comprised of several related symbols. Although they are amenable to infinite interpretations, yet they have striking relevance to the immediate mood, situation, problem or the trend of the questioner.

The infinite possibilities in interpretations are as a blessing as the problems and queries of the subjects cannot be classified into countable categories. They are also infinite. Each situation can be unique and may require a unique interpretation as well. This is what makes the tarot reading a remarkably matchless tool in analyzing an endless variety of situations and predicting the future course of events.

Another important feature of tarot reading is that each card is related to the next one. For example Fool is not a stand alone card. In his odyssey, the Fool comes across the Magician, the next major arcana card.

The Magician card shows the picture of a Magician clad in red and white colored dress, the lemniscale-- a symbol of infinity--, a small wand, a table displaying a chalice, a pentacle, a staff want and a sword. They are the tools that the Magician uses to demonstrate his crafty prowess.

The magician is a self confident and a skilful powerhouse of intelligence. He is a magus with the infinite as a halo revolving around his head. Shrewd as the Magician is, he immediately charms the Fool into giving him away his bundled pack and stick.

It is time for him to invoke and demonstrate his magical powers. He unfolds Fool’s pack on the table and reveals its contents. The Fool is surprised by a new world of future possibilities unfolding before him. There are so many directions full of all the possibilities.

He has all the tools at his disposal. The cool airy sword symbolizes fine intellect and communication. The fiery and powerful wand represents spirituality and ambition. The chalice brimful with the wine shows love and emotions and the solid pentacle represents hard work combined with worldly assets and the body.

As already mentioned, tarot reading involves interpreting the symbols and the pictures. The chalice, wand, pentacle, sword and the pack are all symbols with powerful meanings and possibilities.

The questioner may be a dreaming fantasizing fool going carelessly on the way like a wayward cavalier unmindful of the pitfalls en route. But if he is careful, he can use his intellectual and physical assets as tools and build a glorious future for himself.

The question, however, arises: did the magician create these tools, or, they already existed in Fool’s pack? This is a very serious and philosophical question.

Are we the architects of our own fate? Do we create our own tools such as our intellect and wisdom? Or, we are already endowed with these assets and we just use them. Some of us are not even aware of our intellectual assets not to speak of tapping them to improve our lot.

Numerous other interpretations can be associated with such situations. The magician represents the male power of creation. He can also create new situations by his strong will power. He can speak aloud in the manner of God saying: Let there be light and there was light.

The Magician has the gift of jab characteristic of Mercury. He has the gift of using his tongue dexterously like a smooth talking salesman. He is also gifted with the sleight of hand.

We know that Mercury is the god of thieves. He is also a medicine man. He may be a real doctor or a quack selling your snake oil. The Fool is also endowed with invaluable gifts but they are all lying wrapped in the cloth.

The Magician appears on the scene and reveals these assets to him. The tarot reader may, therefore, interpret the card as telling the questioner that he is already endowed with a vision, ideas and with these assets he can find a successful career and a happy love life.
